I have attended the University of Sunderland for the past 4 years. During this time, I have noticed a vast increase in my confidence, as well as improvement in various other skills, including my organisational skills. This is largely due to my role as a Peer Assisted Study Session (PASS) leader, which I undertook for a year before progressing to become a senior PASS leader, which is my current role. Throughout these roles I have worked as part of a team, working with other students from across the university to ensure that students who attend these sessions get the best possible experience, as well as reporting relevant information back to my supervisors. Within my role as senior PASS leader, I have worked with my team to resolve a variety of issues, to ensure that my team can help to build students confidence in all areas of university life.
Finally, how would you change higher education for the better at Sunderland and beyond?
Throughout my university journey, I have noticed the vast levels of support available for student's wellbeing. However, I have became aware of a gap in support available for students experiencing conditions such as the menopause, or andropause. These conditions can lead to issues for the people suffering from them, including brain fog and forgetfulness. Which may occur in other conditions without people coming forward. I would like to work within the wellbeing team to create policies that will help anyone who requires additional support in completing university work to their best standard. I would also develop focus groups, and study sessions where students facing similar challenges can support each other through their university experiences. By working closely with the education team, we can help to ensure that all students receive the necessary support to have the best possible experience throughout their time at university.

As a student I was eager to experience university life beyond the classroom so I started volunteering with the SU, this gave me an opportunity to work with different organizations where I developed skills in organizing, communication, interpersonal relationships and more. This encouraged me to apply for a job as SU crew which I did for about 6 months while also serving as a society executive. Combining this with my studies was tough but fulfilling as I got to meet and help a lot of students, and this got me interested in running to be an officer for 2023/24 when I became President Education. Employment facing education- I would advocate for all programs to structure their curriculum in a way that places their students at an advantage in the job market. Placement, internship and volunteering opportunities should be available to all students. Academic staff should partner with Center for Graduate Prospects to offer final year students modules that will boost their employability. Improved Feedback system: Introduce the compulsory use of the module feedback form by academics at the end of every module to gather feedback which will be analyzed and used to inform changes in teaching and assessments. Create and increase awareness about academic support services available at Sunderland: This will increase utilization of these services and lead to better academic experience and higher success rates among students.

Ensuring the well-being of all students, regardless of their identities and educational journeys, requires a comprehensive and inclusive approach. This could include developing physical well-being; sport is a culture in the northeast, and creating a sports festival brings all students together regardless of their identity and educational journey. This can be promoted using various advertisements through societies, social media, and during admission, where students will pick a choice of sport and be shown the benefit and support from the Sunderland and well-being teams. Also, encourage student self-awareness and inclusivity by creating an anonymous feedback channel without fear of reprisals between the students, the well-being team, and student support using the student canvas. Student mental health is also significant, and it could be improved through the creation of an AI-powered relaxation pod equipped with comfortable seating, interactive AI, and stress-relief activities such as adult colouring books, puzzles, and a relaxation pod.

At University of Sunderland I have been given opportunities I would like others to know about, such as the range of available scholarships. I was awarded a scholarship myself and I want more people to know and be able to apply to make their university life easier. Students should also know more about the support available from both the University and the Students Union. I have been supported by the university's Wellbeing team and SU's advice team, both of which have helped me and many other students. I also got to connect with different people and got opportunities I wouldn’t have otherwise gotten. I think students should know that coming to Sunderland University is an experience both within studying and in wider life. With all of the activities outside of the university I got to make friends and create links with different people that have helped me with my work.

I want to provide students with an online chatroom where they can talk to other students going through similar experiences anonymously. We would also monitor or members can report, to ensure students are safe. My second idea is to have a termly suggestion box where the students can tell us what they would like improvement on and suggest ways with what we can help them. This would be a good way to include the students and help them be represented in the decision making. As the president I would also like to introduce myself to different classes and make sure people know that there are people here to help and listen to their views. My main aim when being a president is to make sure the students feel heard and to represent them across courses, countries and cultures and create ways for them to help their wellbeing.

From starting study in 2020 I have acted as an unofficial course rep with people coming to me with their concerns and questions. I have assisted people on a personal level and in academia. I organised a petition regarding lack of parking and parking charges that students were receiving and presented this to Estates. In my current role as course rep I have assisted students with my own knowledge in housing, food banks and health care in the Sunderland area. I also have the knowledge to sign post when something is out of my expertise. I have arranged a weekly study group to allow students to receive peer support and come to me with anything they may need assistance with. I am also trying to organise a food bank drive for my faculty and the University community as a whole.
Finally, how would you ensure that the wellbeing of all students is a priority - what you would change and promote, and how would you make sure that the wellbeing of students who do not share the same identities and educational journeys are represented in this work?
I would promote the wellbeing team and chaplaincy as a whole. I do think there needs to be more wellbeing presence on St Peters Campus and what is offered on one campus should be offered at the other. I would change the fact that we do not have any mens social groups on St Peters. I would change that we do not have any LGBTQ+ groups within wellbeing. I would promote sexual health and contraceptive awareness all year round. I would also promote mental health awareness all year round. I would also change the way students have to ask for help and remove barriers in doing so such as receiving vouchers instead of money and not embarrassing the student by scrutinising what they spend their money on in order to receive support. When money is required then receipts should be handed in by the student.

Since joining the university and becoming a member of the Student Staff Liaison committee (SSLC), I have been often asked about my motivation and my route to higher education. For me it was simple, I knew I wanted to learn skill and gain a profession, the one thing that suited my talent was business management. Here in the University of Sunderland, I have been given opportunity that my family links could not have provided. I threw myself in to the university life by voluntarily being a course rep, a wellbeing champion and now a delegate representing the interest of student at the national level. My role is to promote good mental health for student as well as providing support when an issue occurs. My life has transformed from a shy little boy to an advocate. I wouldn’t have had this confidence if not for the opportunity the university gives.
Finally, how would you ensure that the wellbeing of all students is a priority - what you would change and promote, and how would you make sure that the wellbeing of students who do not share the same identities and educational journeys are represented in this work?
There is strong proof that good mental health has a positive impact on a person’s learning, ability to concentrate and overall performance levels. The link between health and learning continues into employability. Just as employers expect healthy workroom and want graduates who understand how to live healthy and look after their wellbeing. But most employers make this impossible as they refuse offering jobs to student because of restricted working hours. I will advocate for the maximum hours of students to be extended and also for a policy that allows employers offers job to student during their studies to support themselves financially in the UK. I will build a relationship with every student. Let students know that getting to know each of them as an individual is important to me. Show genuine interest in learning about their opinions, interests, and backgrounds to promote viewpoint which is a powerful tool to resolve

Winston Churchill once stated, "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give." This statement greatly inspires me, and I chose to make a life by giving services. My dedication to services is demonstrated by the fact that, in just two months of starting my studies at the University of Sunderland in London, I was named a "student spotlight" for December 2023 by the Student Union as Course Rep of the Month. I have a strong drive to achieve my goals because I derive happiness from seeing the blossoming faces of people around me. No wonder I was at the forefront of appealing for flexible payments for the students. I was born with the deep-seated belief that I was meant to help others around me succeed, and I seize every chance to demonstrate this belief in action.
Finally, how would you work to ensure that the views of London students are listened to, and that London-based students have a great time at the University of Sunderland in London?
I would create frequent avenues for communication where students could voice their opinions, worries, and suggestions, such as online forums, town hall meetings, and open forums. By doing this, the student body and the student union would have direct communication, guaranteeing that their voices are heard. In order to guarantee that all opinions are heard during decision-making procedures, I would also support diverse representation within the union. This can be achieved by encouraging a collaborative decision-making culture in which student input is actively sought out and taken into account for issues that have an impact on their time at university. Creating interesting events and activities based on the interests and requirements of students living in London would be my top priority to improve their experience. These could include extracurricular and athletic pursuits, commercial networking opportunities, and community engagement programmes that foster relationships between students and the larger London community.
