By Your SU
On Wednesday 24th April, Union Council met and considered a motion relating to the ongoing Israel-Gaza Conflict, following a widely supported Change It! submission for Your SU to adopt a stance. After discussion, this motion was voted on, and passed unanimously by Union Council. This has since been amended and approved by the Board of Trustees.
This motion is written with collective compassion for the loss of life in this ongoing conflict in Gaza and surrounding areas. Previously, Your SU issued a statement highlighting support that is in place for students affected by the news of events during the Israel-Gaza Conflict. This motion reaffirms our solidarity for the people of Palestine, our duty for the protection of freedom of speech, and our commitment to academic freedom of expression. This motion also notes that Your SU stands against antisemitism, Islamophobia and discrimination on the basis of anyone’s identity.
In light of the increase of both Islamophobia and antisemitism across UK campuses, it is of utmost importance to remember that none of our Palestinian, Israeli, Jewish, Muslim, or other student communities are responsible for the events of the Israeli-Gaza Conflict. Racial discrimination in all forms should be fought against and rejected, and Your SU represents and stands for all our members who have been affected by this. This motion resolves that:
