Parking Charges

I am writing to raise my concerns regarding the recent increase in parking fees for students.

While I understand that changes to parking charges may be necessary for the university, I am concerned about the significant impact that increased costs could have on students, particularly those who rely on their cars to attend university.

For many students, parking is not simply a convenience. Some students live a considerable distance from campus, have limited or unreliable public transport options, or have other commitments that make driving the only realistic way for them to attend university. An increase in parking fees adds another financial burden at a time when many students are already struggling with the rising costs of living, tuition, accommodation, travel and other essential expenses.

I am particularly concerned that some students may be forced to reconsider how often they attend university because they simply cannot afford the additional parking costs. This could result in students missing lectures, seminars, practical sessions and other important aspects of their course. Over time, reduced attendance could have a negative impact on students' learning, academic performance, wellbeing and ultimately their ability to successfully complete their studies.

There is also a wider concern that if attending university becomes financially unaffordable for students, some may feel they have no choice but to reduce their attendance or, in more serious cases, reconsider continuing their studies altogether. This would not only have a significant impact on individual students but could also affect the university community as a whole.

I would therefore ask the Student Union to consider raising this issue with the university and advocating for students who may be disproportionately affected by the increase. It would be helpful to explore whether alternative arrangements could be considered, such as reduced student parking rates, discounted permits, hardship support, flexible payment options, or other measures to ensure that students are not financially disadvantaged simply because they need to travel to campus.

I believe students should be able to attend university and engage fully with their education without parking costs becoming a barrier to their studies.

I would appreciate it if the Student Union could look into this matter and consider what action can be taken to represent students' concerns.
