We, the undersigned, call upon the University of Sunderland to urgently review and revise its current tuition fee payment structure for self-funded students, in light of the ongoing cost-of-living crisis in the United Kingdom.

The existing two-instalment payment plan puts an undue financial burden on students, with tuition fees that can exceed £10,000. This situation creates excessive stress, which negatively impacts academic performance, mental wellbeing, and overall student welfare.

If left unaddressed, the current payment structure will continue to strain students' financial capacities, thereby potentially compromising the quality of education at the University of Sunderland. The mental and emotional wellbeing of students is also at risk due to the financial pressures they face.

The urgency to rectify this issue cannot be overstated. Immediate changes are imperative to prevent adverse effects on the academic and emotional wellbeing of all students, but particularly those who are self-funded.

We strongly advocate for the University of Sunderland to adopt a more flexible, student-centric approach by introducing monthly payment plan options, specifically tailored for self-funded students.

Therefore, we urge the University of Sunderland to take swift and decisive action in this matter. The time for such commitment is now, especially as upcoming payment deadlines further intensify financial stress among students.

Inflation,Currency devaluation and the challenges with payments through Form A at our Banks should be put into consideration so that more time is given to self funded International students. The current deadline for January is putting so much pressure on us and affecting our concentration and mental. Many of us are just arriving and haven’t been able to fully settle in due strict accomodation condition. This request should be given attention for the well being of every student

The Tuition pressure is alarming I paid a substantial amount 3 days ago and was told I have to pay everything as that was the agreement on my offer letter, I didn't even see the part. I thought payment is spread across the 1st month of resumption till probably the 7th month. The words they address student with are very demeaning irrespective of us being white or not, it is terrible enough that you call student on phone like thieving criminals, but then adding threats and harassing statements is just so condescending, a payment approach should be allowed and put in place.

Dear University of Sunderland, As a concerned member of the school community, it is important for the school management to address the issue of inflexible payment structures that can create financial strain for students and their families. The inability to pay fees in a lump sum can lead to exclusion from educational opportunities, which is contrary to the principles of equal access to education. Therefore, this petition is directed to the school management as we requesting the implementation of flexible payment options as a proactive step towards ensuring that all students have the opportunity to pursue their education without financial barriers.

Introducing a flexible payment method will increase the relationship of both the school, the students and the community at large,so the school should please also consider the well being of the students,we have about 10-11months ahead before graduation,we won't run away with the fees,we will surely pay, there is a way the fees can be splitted to make it easier for students, because the number of months we have ahead is more than the months we have spent here..thanks

A 2years course should have a flexible payment schedule. Student their parents can’t afford to pay fees all at one’s shouldn’t be denied the opportunity to educate their children. With the mental stress I went through to complete my school fees even though I had 15 more months to go was enough for me to give up. And it affected my grades and my mental health. The emails , calls and threats from finance department truly shows that school only cares about the money before anything else. Other schools offer flexibility in payment of fees. But with what I personally went through I don’t think I can recommend Sunderland university to any international students. In my case I was even accused of using my fees for something else by the finance department. Imagine writing assignments and receiving threats to pay fees. Again it’s not even my fault because my country stopped the use of form A but yet my explanations wasn’t valid enough. I really wish the school management will look into paying flexibility.

I completely agree with this petition. Being a student paying my own fees, the current payment system is tough. If you could make the payment plan more flexible with monthly options, it would really help us out. Thank you for listening and considering this – it would mean a lot to students like me who are working hard to afford our education.

This is true. We need 3 more installments for those that will conclude their studies this year and 6 more installments for those concluding their study next year and vise versa.

Yes We need flexible payment plan for the tuition fee, I was already in search of such kind of platform to raise my voice. The time frame is too short for second payment. Inflation is too high here. The budget we have set for studies is not getting sufficient. Its should be flexible please.

Definitely, we need flexible payment plan for the tuition fee. The allowed time frame is too short for second payment. I am on a two year course and the full fee has to be submitted within first year that too within three months. Time frame should be increased and made more flexible.

It should be flexible; like spreading it throughout the duration of the course, as this put a lot of stress on us and as such affect our mental and academic performance.
