Welcome to the Nepalese Society!

Our society provides a welcoming and inclusive community where students can connect, build friendships and develop a sense of belonging. We celebrate and share Nepalese culture, traditions and festivals with the wider University of Sunderland community.

We plan to organise cultural celebrations, social meetups, networking opportunities, workshops and collaborative events with other societies. We also aim to support our members’ personal, academic and professional development.

Everyone is welcome to join, whether you are from Nepal or simply interested in learning more about Nepalese culture.

Membership

Annual membership costs £3. Membership fees will support society events, meetups, promotional materials, workshops and other activities for members.

By purchasing membership, you agree to follow the society’s Terms and Conditions and Code of Conduct.

Society Members’ Code of Conduct

Our Society will:

• Be open to all University of Sunderland students.

• Be inclusive and free from racism, classism, sexism, ageism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, biphobia, body shaming, xenophobia and religious discrimination.

• Respect the rights of others to express, within the law, their beliefs and convictions.

• Participate in all compulsory training to ensure that societies comply with SU policies and the law.

• Be positive ambassadors for the SU and the University. We will uphold and not bring into question or bring into disrepute the reputation of the SU, the University or any society.

• Not permit initiations as a membership requirement.

• Ensure that all society activities and events are risk-assessed and delivered safely.

• Treat University facilities, staff, students and other individuals and organisations with respect, abiding by all applicable rules and agreements.

• Act honestly about our activities, beliefs and allegiances, providing the SU with relevant details of any affiliations with other organisations.

• Ensure that all media, including digital and printed material, is free from content that could be considered offensive or unlawful.

• Act respectfully when taking and using photographs or filming. Members must be given the opportunity to opt out and request that photographs or recordings of them are not published.

• Not hold an external bank account.

• Not raise money for a charity other than the SU without the SU’s prior agreement.

• Not enter into contracts, sponsorship agreements or place orders without the SU’s agreement.

• Ensure that the society’s finances are used only to benefit its members. No individual member shall receive financial gain from the society’s activities.

• Comply with the University’s Freedom of Speech policies.

• Act within the law.

• Accept that the SU may take action or unregister our society if we fail to comply with this Code of Conduct.

Committee Terms and Conditions

• Your Society's committees must include the two core roles of President and Treasurer to be registered with your SU and receive society benefits. If alternative titles are used, the corresponding core role must be identified.

• Additional committee positions may be created and should be added alongside the core roles.
