Are you Fit to Sit?

Sunderland University has a “Fit to Sit” policy, which says that, when a student submits an assignment or sits an examination they “deem themselves Fit to Sit”.

This basically means that, by submitting an assessment, you are saying that:

  • You’re fine to submit work,
  • You don’t have any extenuating circumstances that you would want the University to take into account,
  • You’re not going to come back later and ask for undisclosed extenuating circumstances to be taken into account as part of an Academic Appeal.

Deeming yourself Fit to Sit also means:

  • Any extenuating circumstance claim which you have submitted in relation to the assessment will be disregarded (as you can’t say “I’m fine to sit the assessment” and also “I have these circumstances which mean that I’m not fine to sit the assessment” at the same time)
  • If you do later try to make an Academic Appeal on the basis of unconsidered extenuating circumstances, you will need to provide reasons for why the Fit to Sit policy should not apply to you (very tricky to do if you have deemed yourself Fit to Sit!)

If you think that you may NOT be Fit to Sit, you should consider submitting a claim for Extenuating Circumstances. If you have any questions about this process or would like to discuss your options, your Students’ Union is here to help. We can also help you to think about alternatives, such as Leave of Absence from studies if that could be appropriate for you.
