Update on EHRC Code of Practice

By Your SU

Last summer, Your SU submitted a response to the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC)’s consultation on its Equality Act guidance, following the Supreme Court’s ruling that for the purpose of the Equality Act, sex refers to ‘biological sex’. This response was formed from student consultation on the EHRC’s interim Code of Practice, which was created to help organisations understand how the ruling would affect them.

On 21st May 2026, the EHRC released an updated draft Code of Practice. This code is not yet enforceable, as Parliament has 40 days to review it from 21st May. There has been some pushback, including from LGBTQ+ groups, and one Member of Parliament (MP) is leading a campaign to disapprove the Code of Practice. If you wish to support this campaign you can do so here: Email your MP to reject the Code of Practice and support EDM 240.

The Code of Practice, if confirmed, will have some implications for the University and students’ union activities. We are in close communication with the University on this, to understand how this may impact students, and will ensure that the student body receive clear information and support accordingly.

What are Your SU doing?

Your SU is committed to ensuring that all students are included, respected and feel safe, on and off campus. The recent news, along with how it is discussed in the media and online, will be very difficult for some students. Details of support services are listed below.

During this time, we recognise the importance of community, solidarity and celebration of diversity. As June is Pride month, we are proudly displaying pride flags in our SU spaces on campus. We also have free Pride stickers to give away, so please get in touch if you would like one. If any students would like to organise a student community event, for Pride or another reason, our Student Communities Fund is open until the end of June.

Apply to the Student Communities Fund here.
