NSPCC Deliver Insightful Session for Students During University Visit

By Your SU

Last Wednesday, we were delighted to welcome a team from the NSPCC (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children), who talked to students to give them an insight into their work, how they operate and the volunteering opportunities they offer. The session was part of a wider visit to the University.

The team consisted of Sir Peter Wanless (CEO), Hayley Lynn (Community Fundraising Manager - North East) and Katy Scott (Supporter Fundraising Manager - North East, Yorkshire & the Humber). Sir Peter gave an engaging and informative presentation about the work of the charity, its key objectives and how it has had to adapt over the years.

How did the session go?

There was then the opportunity for students to ask questions, leading to some in-depth and meaningful conversations, for which we know the students involved are very grateful for.

On the NSPCC visit, University Secretary Andrea Walters said: “The University and the Students’ Union have a long-standing collaborative relationship with the NSPCC in support of its activities. Through our joint working, our students and staff have taken part in various initiatives from volunteering to fundraising. We were delighted to welcome Sir Peter Wanless to the University to meet our students and for them to find out more about the work of the NSPCC.”

Later in the session, Hayley went on to talk about how students can get involved in volunteering. There are currently a couple of established volunteering links with the University and Your SU. Firstly, Sunderland Futures works with the Schools Service to get students going into schools to deliver presentations. This is a very involved approach that does require proper training and DBS checks, but it incredibly impactful.

Secondly, Your SU have a ‘NSPCC Student Engagement Volunteer’ role, which focuses on encouraging students to fundraise for the NSPCC on campus. If you are passionate about supporting the work of the NSPCC and are interested in this role, you can find out more about it the NSPCC Student Engagement Volunteer role here.

We would like to thank Sir Peter and the NSPCC team for taking the time to speak to our students and answer their questions.
