Events FAQs

All Your SU events are available to view & book on our website here: https://www.sunderlandsu.co.uk/events.

Although the majority of Your SU’s events are free of charge, we do ask that you book online to guarantee entry as this helps us prepare for how many students we will be expecting to attend & since we must follow health & safety procedures & manage capacity. This also allows us to cater for specific dietary requirements (when food is involved) and be aware of any accessibility requirements.

The University have teamed with AccessAble to offer detailed accessibility guides for each building & room on campus. These let campus users see exactly what to expect when on campus & attending our events including where lifts, ramps & accessible toilet facilities are based, plus so much more. You can find this guide for Your SU @ CitySpace here: www.accessable.co.uk/university-of-sunderland/city-campus/access-guides/cityspace.

Unfortunately, unless otherwise stated, our events are for students only. This is due to the requirement to focus our charitable funding towards the student population. If you have a query about bringing a non-student to a specific event, please contact yoursuevents@sunderland.ac.uk.

We have a new Your SU Events suggestions & comments box here: https://forms.gle/87xpZLFLpYkJv3CSA. Each month, your President of Activities will discuss these with the Student Opportunities staff team. However, if your comments require a response, please contact yoursuevents@sunderland.ac.uk and we will endeavour to get back to you within 2-3 working days.

SU Crew are paid student staff, employed by the Students Union to support events & activities. This can sometimes be alongside SU staff, or on their own.

Keep an eye on www.sunderland.ac.uk/jobs for updates when we are hiring for these roles.

This is due to staffing hours & opening times of the Students Union, however Your Societies regularly run activities on weekends. You can find the society for you here: https://www.sunderlandsu.co.uk/groups.

We understand that not all students are able to stay late into the evenings, that’s why we moved our fortnightly Pizza, Games & VR events to Tuesdays 4:30pm till 6:30pm. We also have our weekly Wellbeing Wednesday activities on Wednesday afternoons and each month hold a whole host of large scale cultural celebrations & other one off activities, that you can pop by in your breaks between lectures. Check our website’s Your Events page for full up-to-date details.

We know how popular sports activities are for our student population, and it’s a question we get asked about a lot. Our friends across the corridor at Team Sunderland look after all things sport on campus & you can find more details on their website: https://sj.sunderland.ac.uk/student-information/support-services/team-sunderland/.

We are a relatively small Students’ Union compared to others, but that comes with the exciting prospect of us constantly growing. We have been running more events & activities than ever over the past year & this is set to continue. We have many societies that run regular activities & events + you could set up your own too!

Trips

Your SU runs monthly coach trips to different cities & tourist attractions around the country. Over the past year we’ve visited Edinburgh, Leeds, York, Durham and more! You can sign up to our SU Trips mailing list to find out exclusive details on upcoming trips & when they are going on sale before anybody else. https://forms.gle/tMcmCW988PLG3UPx5.

Your SU trips usually take place on Fridays as, after much trial & error, we have found this to be the day that the most students are free to attend. We know, however, that this is not perfect for everybody, so we are working this semester with local tour provider Lundgren Tours to offer weekend trips at discounted rates for our students. You can find these here: https://www.sunderlandsu.co.uk/events?event_type=lundgren-tours&search=.

The basic answer to this question is that these trips are incredibly expensive to run, especially during the current financial climate. However, we want to make SU trips as affordable as possible, so we subsidise the cost of each trip for students. We pride ourselves on keeping Your SU Trips affordable for students. For example, our trip to Beamish in December 2022 was the same price as it was in 2014.
