STOP PRESS: TAX SCAM TARGETING STUDENTS!

THOUSAND OF STUDENTS ARE BEING TARGETED TO RELEASE THEIR BANK DETAILS BY SCAM EMAIL PURPORTEDLY FROM HMRC.

Since the HMRC tax code scandal a little while ago, HMRC have been automatically issuing tax calculations and tax refunds as well as demands to rectify their mistakes. Many Students will have received refunds or a notification a refund is due by POST. These are more than likely genuine, but the fraudsters are sending emails to students in the hope the student will think it is really HMRC following up on their refund notice.

Students in Sunderland are being urged to protect their valuables from thieves.

Many students are returning to the city after the Christmas holidays and are bringing belongings such as sat navs, laptops, phones and cameras back with them.

These items are extremely attractive to criminals and officers are advising students to do everything they can to protect them.

Neighbourhood Inspector John Connolly said: “Items like mobile phones, laptops and digital cameras are exactly the type of items that thieves are looking to get their hands on. They can be picked up and taken in seconds - especially if they are left out on show.
