We know what makes a student-friendly venue so we’ve pulled together these top tips to help venues create places for you in your City.

Make your venue even more accessible…

  • Make sure you have wheelchair access throughout all floors
  • Install accessible toilet(s)
  • Install gender neutral toilet(s)
  • Have a hearing loop available
  • Print alternative format menus (braille, large print)
  • Install clear signage to toilet facilities
  • Have guide dog provisions available
  • Have a ‘quite area’ for first aid or other customer medical needs
  • Have a safe indoor or outdoor space for customers waiting to get home
  • Make sure breastfeeding is welcome
  • List your premises on Euan’s Guide
  • Offer to carry food and drinks to the table.
  • Install moveable tables and lowered counters
  • Give staff disability awareness training

Make your venue even more student-friendly…

  • Offer free wifi
  • Train staff to provide good, friendly customer service
  • Signpost students to the nearest public transport
  • Offer a free taxi phone service
  • Have power points available for laptops and phone chargers
  • Get large tables for student groups to meet and socialise
  • Employ student staff to help them gain skills and earn some money
  • Have student rewards, offers and discounts
  • Have a student menu
  • Have free drinking water available at all times
  • Promote responsible drinking

  • Have a Challenge 25 Policy
  • Have an Equality and Diversity Policy
  • Promote personal safety messages
  • Display information about awareness raising campaigns and where to seek support
  • Have a process in place to help customers report discrimination, harassment or abuse to Northumbria Police
  • Employ trained, licensed (helpful) security staff
  • Welcome customer feedback
  • Have a Complaints Policy
  • Understand and train your staff about Discrimination Act and Equality Law
  • Display customer guidance on promoting respect and equality
  • Actively report discrimination, harassment or abuse witnessed in your venue to Northumbria Police
