You Signed, You Said, You Supported!
...and now we’ve done it!
Following a campaign by YOUR Students’ Union, the University of Sunderland have confirmed that they will provide 2 free tickets for all graduating students for all graduation ceremonies moving forward.
This action is a direct result of the WEAROverPaying Campaign that we ran in 2017. Throughout the campaign, you made your voice heard through a petition which gathered over 900 signatures and by completing our survey to tell us what you thought about the cost of graduation. We asked simply for the University to make the cost of graduation more affordable for students by providing two free tickets for all graduates in addition to their own.
The University has responded to the campaign by confirming that from the Summer 2017 graduations onwards, all graduates will receive 2 free tickets for their graduation ceremony in addition to their own ticket. This will save students £55 on the cost of their graduation and allow them to invite two loved ones to join them to celebrate their achievement. Additional tickets will still be available to purchase for students who want them.
Kirsty Paterson, who led on the campaign says:
"I am delighted at the University’s response to the campaign and appreciate the support shown by the University’s Executive team on this issue. Thanks to our campaign, they have recognised this as a real issue faced by graduating students and have worked hard to implement this change quickly to benefit as many students as possible.
I’d like to thank all of the students who supported the campaign and made their voice heard on an issue which affects all students. This change would not have happened without your support. So to everyone who signed the petition, completed the survey, shared and liked our social media posts and contributed to the campaign by sharing their experience – thank you. We did it!"
University Pro-Vice Chancellor, Dr Robert Trimble, said:
“Ensuring our students get the best experience and best value in all they do here is paramount. That is why I am very pleased indeed that we have been able to significantly reduce the overall costs on our students’ most important day.”
Between 26 September and 21 October 2016, we asked you to SIGN | SAY | SUPPORT, your Vice President, Kirsty Paterson, with the WEARoverpaying campaign.
The campaign sought to lower the overall price of graduation for students and suggested that all graduates receive two free tickets for their ceremony.
