We get up close and personal with Your SU Buddies.

This week, meet Grace...

Studying: 2nd Year Cardiac Physiology

From: Sunderland

Why did you apply to be an SU Buddy?

When I first started university, all of my friends from school moved away and I felt quite alone. Although I’m from Sunderland and know the area really well, it was sometimes a struggle to find friends away from my course. I applied to be a buddy because I wanted to help anybody that found themselves in a similar situation to me back then!

How often do you see your Buddy?

During Freshers, my buddy and I met up every couple of weeks but they’re a lot more settled and comfortable now so we meet up less often. We still message every so often and I check how they’re getting on. It’s nice to be able to keep in contact and they know that if they need me I’m just a phone call or a message away!

What made you choose Sunderland?

I chose to come to Sunderland University because it’s close to home and the course is amazing – it’s not something they offer at many other universities!

What are your favourite things to do with your Buddy around Sunderland?

One of my favourite things to do with my buddies is taking trips to the National Glass Centre – they always have loads of new exhibitions on and there’s a cute café to grab some food. It’s always nice to go for walks along the beach too. Sunderland is great for the beaches!

What skills have you learned from being a Buddy?

I’ve learned so many skills since becoming a buddy and it’s allowed me to become such a helpful person and I know that if my buddy needs any extra help with something and I’m unsure of the answer, I’m able to signpost them to someone who can provide them with the answers they need!

What would you say to anyone thinking about joining the SU Buddy Scheme?

Definitely do it!
