Allegations involving Police

If an allegation has been made against you to the police (or if the police believe you may have committed an offence), the police will need to investigate this. You may be arrested or invited to attend a police interview voluntarily, or the police may seek to voluntarily interview you elsewhere such as your home.

Even if you have done nothing wrong, we strongly recommend you get a solicitor to support, even for voluntary interviews.

Everyone is entitled to free and independent legal advice when interviewed by the police.

You can ask for the duty solicitor or make contact with one you have found yourself who is willing to act.

You can search for Solicitors at the law society website. Whilst the Sunderland Student Law Clinic’s free legal advice does not extend to criminal matters, they may be able to sign post you to local services.
