Student VoiceYou said it, We did it

You asked us what action we were taking, as your Students’ Union, about the proposed increase in tuition fees and the cuts to University funding.

[i]The Executive Committee ran a major campaign against the increase in fees and University cuts.  They are encouraging students to make their voice heard on this issue and to make their views known to the coalition government who are implementing these plans.

On 10 November, the Executive Committee, with a large number of Sunderland students, went down to London and joined the 50,000 strong march organised by NUS.  They peaceably and professionally supported the march and added their protest.

We were approached by a group of mature students who felt that the Union were not doing anything for them. They wanted to know what we were going to do about it.

We met with a couple of them and discussed their concerns and what they would like to see happening.  They also arranged for a small group of their fellow students to visit us at North Shore, so we could show them the facilities and what we could offer them and indeed their families.

We are looking forward to helping them to arrange some events and activities in North Shore and elsewhere

Students wanted space for activities, events and a place of their own to meet, have coffee, food, drink etc.

We’ve taken on North Shore, which is a multi function student building, with space that is free for students to use.  We’ve held the Freshers ents programmes 2010/11 there but there is so much more that you can do there.  The building is there for students to use and to tell us what they would like to see happening there

You told us on Facebook what you wanted to see included in our Freshers11 entertainment programme at North Shore

[i]The main events which were highlighted by those students who responded were a Foam Party, School disco, celebrity appearances and Beach party.

We included those in our programme and they were a great success, so thank you.

We’ll soon be asking you for your ideas on what to include in our Freshers 12 programme.

The University also have a You Said, We Did section on their website where you can see what actions they have taken as a result of your feedback
