WELCOME TO STUDENT REPRESENTATION

Being a student is without doubt one of the most important and useful roles you can play during your time at Sunderland University.

Repping is a great opportunity for you to get your voice heard and be involved in the decision-making process, which affects you and your fellow students.

Student Reps help to improve the quality of all students’ education and services as well as gaining many valuable skills and experiences along the say, making new friends and being kept up to date with the latest University/Union business.
A Student Rep is a student from any degree programme who would like to represent the views of their fellow students.  Repping is voluntary so you can put as much or as little time into it as you wish, it depends on how much you want to get involved and what areas you wish to be involved in
Within your role you can attend and participate in meetings and riase student issues and needs, ensureing that the student perspective is expressed and considered.  This enables the staff to gauge how things are going for the students and issues can be addressed as soon as possible.

Another role you can play a part in, is to attend Focus Groups, these are a great way for the services of the University to have an insight to how the students perceive the services in order for them to improve.  These can be held to answer specific topics either academic or non-academic.
Focus Groups held in the past have been highly successful enabling the University to improve and ensure the student voice is heard.  This way we can ensure we can provide students with what they want!

A detailed list of all meetings, boards and committees with further information are available. These are available to download below.

Once you are an elected Student Rep you will be provided with the opportunity to attend a Student Representative Training session which is designed to ensure you know how you fit into the whole system, what your role entails, along with widening your understanding of the University/Union services, procedures, meetings and support.
All trained Student Representatives receive a Certificate of Achievement which is presented at the Student Representation Award Ceremony.  This event is an opportunity for the University and Students’ Union to thank all the Student Representatives for all teir hard work and commitment over the academic year is usually held in May.
Once trained you can help, direct and guide your fellow peers to the relevant contacts on:
Issues with their course of study, accommodation, tenancy contracts, landlords etc…..

Throughout the year the Representation Department holds many Social Events for Student Representatives to attend.
These are free of charge and range from free lunches, outings to the bowling alley and even the fantastic Christmas Reps Party.

Also, all Student Representatives are issued with a Student Representatives Handbook, available to donwload below.  The Handbook Guide will provide you with the basics of what you need to know and how you fit into the whole system.
You will also receive regular Student Representation Newsletters which are designed to keep you up to date with current issues within the University and Students’ Union.
