JOB DESCRIPTION

 

JOB TITLE: SHOP ASSISTANT


RESPONSIBLE TO: Shop Supervisor

 

MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB: Working in liaison with other Shop Assistants, for the day to day service operation of a shop, retailing a wide range of confectionery, newspapers, stationery, greeting cards and general goods in accordance with Union policy and under the direction of the Shop Supervisor. The postholder will assist in ensuring that high standards of customer service are maintained.

 

MAIN DUTIES:

 

  1. Maintain a high standard of personal presentation and hygiene and wearing of staff uniform provided whilst on duty.
  2. Be aware of security issues concerning stock and cash that may be targeted through shoplifting and theft and report any incidents to the Shop Supervisor.
  3. Accepts and checks deliveries and stores appropriately and ensures the security of all stock.
  4. Reports any stock delivery shortage immediately to the Shop Supervisor.
  5. Prices stock (as required) under the direction of the Shop Supervisor.
  6. Organises and assists in stocking up of the shop throughout the day.
  7. Ensures that stock is put away in rotation and also sold in rotation to minimise wastage through out of date stock.
  8. Monitors stock levels of regular weekly ordered items.
  9. Monitors all products in the shop and informs the Shop Supervisor of any items which are out, or going out of stock.
  10. Operates a cash register and provide counter services, as necessary to ensure effective customer service.
  11. Assist customers, deal with queries, problems, complaints etc.
    SUPPLEMENTARY DUTIES: 
  12. Assists in the termly stocktake, e.g. counting, listing stock.
  13. Attend any relevant meetings/training courses as directed by the Shop.
  14. Ensures that shop areas are kept in a general state of cleanliness and that Health and Safety policies are enforced.
    In addition to the above duties the postholder may be asked to undertake other duties in the event of staff illness or extraordinary workload in any of the commercial services, given that the Union have made reasonable provision for training in those areas and that tasks can reasonably be expected to be within the capabilities of the employee.
