The British Universities Sports Association is the only organisation that specifically provides competitions and representative sport for over 150 institutions throughout the country. It is most renowned for its Wednesday afternoon fixtures for mainstream sports. However, students have a chance in other sports to compete in one-off competitions (Canoe, Canoe Polo, Climbing, Judo, Equestrian and Surfing are just some), as well as having the chance to represent their region and country.
Each team is placed in a league within the North-east and Yorkshire division, which stretches from Newcastle to Sheffield and includes Universities such as Northumbria, Leeds, Durham and our varsity rivals, Teesside. Winning a league will result in promotion and finishing last may result in relegation. Each team plays between 5 and 10 matches of a mixture of home and away, within the region, not including possible play off and cup matches. All of the fixture arrangements are done through the Sports and Recreation Officer. It is a great opportunity to play sport for the University and to travel extensively around the country for a very small price.
For those who excel in their chosen sport, there are opportunities to enter trials for representative student teams that compete once a year in a home nations tournament and possible represent your country in the British University and World University games.
