Athlete Support

UNIVERSITY SPORT SUNDERLAND

ATHLETE SUPPORT PROGRAMME.

The University is rapidly developing the services it offers to students and staff in the area of Sport and Recreation, through the University Sport Sunderland Alliance.

As part of this commitment to Sport, The University of Sunderland is introducing an athlete support scheme to assist athletes performing at an advanced level while studying at the University.

This scheme is open to any student studying on an official University of Sunderland course and who are both a member of the Centre for Sport and Recreation and a member of the Student Union.

Support scholarships of up to £750 are available to students who are performing at national or international levels in their chosen sport and who are representing the University in British Universities & College Sports ( BUCS) competitions.

A limited number of scholarships will be available per academic year and a panel from The University Sport Sunderland Alliance will assess applications and award the scholarships.

The intention of the scholarships is to support the athletes development while studying in Sunderland and the awards may be used to off set the cost of accommodation, provide coaching, or support travel.

The scholarships in most cases can not be used to purchase personal pieces of equipment.

The total number of scholarships awarded in each year is likely to be approximately 10.

These awards are directed at individual athletes and are not team awards as the University's focus sports, and BUCS team sports are being supported through the priority sport support

programme
