The Bonded

The Bonded Warehouse is situated on the south side of the River Wear. Built in the early 19th Century, its housed a "smithy" making ships chains and anchors, with a marine store dealer to hold goods "in bond" to save payment of duty.
Its many uses included ownership by a Scottish brewer, a store for spices from the east and, in recent years it was owned bu Rose Line Shipping Company, before falling into disrepair.
After extensive fire damage, it was restored by English Heritage in 1997. In 1999, as the new occupier, the Students Union kept some of the original features and blended these with a continental design, making this a unique building in an area which is undergoing rapid regeneration.
The Bonded Warehouse special features include:- full disabled access with lift to the first floor, internet facilities, large screens, fully licensed bar, extensive riverside and port views, private 1st floor paved garden (ideal for BBQ's and summer events).
Whether you are planning a conference. meeting or special function, you will recieve a high quality of service at the Bonded Warehouse. Our experienced and enthusiastic staff are only too willing to discuss your requirements...
