Safety and Security

Sunderland is generally quite a safe place to live and most students will not encounter any violence or personal loss by theft or vandalism however it is always wise to take precautions.

Returning to your home

If you feel vulnerable, do take preventative measures

- Avoid walking alone at night, especially in unlit and/or unpopulated areas.

-Arrange to meet friends to walk home. Vary your routine, but make sure you take a safe route.

-When walking alone, keep and look alert, walk quickly and look behind you occasionally. Always look like you know where you are going.

-Walk facing oncoming traffic, where possible, and do not use personal stereos in isolated places or late at night as you will not be able to hear someone approaching.

-If you suspect you are being followed, go to the nearest populated area, ie. shop, houses, pub and ask for help.

-If using public transport, stand at a busy stop if possible, and not in doorways or behind hedges.

-If you are a woman, try to sit near other women on buses or trains and avoid empty train carriages.

-Ask mini cab drivers for identification.

-Do not take rides in unmarked cars even if the driver claims to be a mini-cab.

Home security

-Please remember to keep your possessions safe, mark valuable items with your home postcode.

-Consider how secure your accommodation is - does it have window locks and/or burglar alarms?

-No matter which type of accommodation you have, you should always have home contents insurance.

-If you are going away from your home for any period of time look at our vacation advice.
