Crime Prevention Advice for students -

If you are leaving your residence for any period of time over a vacation consider the following:

  • Take valuable property away with you.
  • If you are going to leave valuable items, computers, TV's etc., hide them. Put them in the loft if possible but even under a bed would be better than nothing. Hopefully burglars checking quickly will assume you have taken them with you.
  • If you have a rented a TV, Video, etc. get the rental company to collect them for the vacation.
  • Before leaving check over your premises to ensure all doors and windows are locked. Activate the burglar alarm when leaving if one is fitted. Do not draw the curtains and blinds as this attracts attention that the house is empty.
  • If you have friends who are staying in Sunderland over the vacation ask them to visit and put a light on for a few hours some evenings.
  • The Post Office will hold or re-direct mail.
  • Ensure all property is marked with UV pens including postcode.
  • If you have work stored on floppy disks and CD's remember these are also sometimes stolen.
