Application forms are available in the Students’ Union Advice Centre in Edinburgh Building, International Student Support in The Gateway or on the Immigration and Nationality Directorate (IND) Website [www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk clicking all forms on the left hand side and then scrolling down to the form you want.
The Student Union Advice Centre can check and post your application form for you, as can the International Student Support staff.
The Students’ Union Advice Centre or the International Student Support staff can send the application forms to the Home Office - they are usually sent in a batch near the expiry date and tend to be returned quicker than if you send them yourself.Make a note of your L to R period in your passport.
To extend your L to R yourself, you should send your application to:

The charge for this service is £250.00
To take your application in person, you will need to make an appointment at one of the Public Enquiry Offices, (PEO’s) addresses on application form and available from the Students’ Union Advice Centre.
The charge for this is £500.00.
Your application to extend your L to R must be made before the expiry date in your passport and should be sent by recorded or special delivery.
Special delivery has insurance of up to a maximum of £2500.00 where as recorded delivery has insurance of only £30.00.
The following documents should be enclosed with your application:
-Your payment for the application
- Passport or travel document
-2 passport photographs with your name on the back
-PRC (if applicable)
-The last three months’ bank statements
-An attendance letter, (you will need to order this from The Gateway, Edinburgh Building).
-Your registration form
-A transcript of results for previous study
-Fees receipt
If you have just finished a course and are waiting to start a new course, you will need to send in your unconditional offer letter and evidence that you have accepted a place, instead of an attendance letter.
IF YOU DO NOT HAVE ALL THESE DOCUMENTS, YOU MUST STILL MAKE YOUR APPLICATION BEFORE YOUR L to R EXPIRES.
You will need to put a letter in with your application explaining why not all documents are enclosed and how long it will take you to send them in.
The Home Office will normally hold your application for a couple of weeks, while waiting for the rest of the information.
If you do not send the missing information within a reasonable period of time, the Home Office is likely to refuse your application for an extension.
Application for L to R Extension is refused If the Home office refuses to extend your L to R, the reasons will be stated in their letter of refusal.
If your application was made before your L to R had expired, you are entitled to appeal within 10 working days.
(This time limit is very strict).
You should consult an advisor in the Students’ Union Advice Centre if you are refused an extension.
The advisors will give you further information on how to appeal and can give you a list of solicitors and immigration advisory services that may be able to help.
NOTE:
There is NO right of appeal if you have made a late application for your L to R extension and the Home Office refuses it.
