Welcome to Your Union

Dear Tracy is another name for a Frequently Asked Questions page......

 Dear Tracy

I have just started University, but I'm finding it difficult to make new friends.  I'm feeling quite lonely and homesick and am missing my family and friends. What do you suggest I do?

Tracy's reply:

It is not uncommon to feel like this and many students do, particularly during the first few months at University.  Coming to University is one of the biggest life changes you may ever experience and so it is quite usual to feel a little unsettled at first.  Over time, you will start to make new friends, but there are things that you can do to help.  You could try the following:

  • Make an appointment to drop in and see me click here
  • Come along to the next meeting of Connect
  • Join clubs and societies Click here for a list
  • Arrange to meet up with people from your course outside of lectures
  • Contact the University Chaplain for friendship, support and pastoral care, regardless of any particular religious affiliation or none at all
  • Volunteer with Community Bridge.  This is a really great way of meeting new people and gaining new skills at the same time
  • Go to the Globe Cafe
Sometimes, feeling lonely can cause much distress.  If you would like to talk over how you are feeling in more depth, make an appointment to see a University Counsellor
