Within each School there are a range of formal Boards and informal committees which oversee the running of programmes.
This may exist under another name! It is a fairly informal group of student reps from each level of your programme and key programme staff.
Issues related to the organisation and delivery of a programme will be discussed at meetings. As a Rep involved in the committee you will be expected to feed back proposed changes on development to the appropriate staff and report back on action taken as a result of an issue previously raised.
Not all Schools/Programmes have these groups, as decision-making structures vary considerably across the University. If there is no such group, and you feel it would be useful, suggest it to your Programme Leader.
Usually Staff/Student Liaison Committees meet several times a year or when it is necessary to deal with urgent issues.
Membership
School staff and at least two student representatives.
Responsibilities
The operation, review and development of a range of modules in a particular subject area.
This board takes decisions about the modules offered in a subject area. The results of annually gathered feedback on modules is examined (usually in the autumn of each year) and reported to the School Quality Board (SQB). Proposals for modifications to modules are similarly discussed and reported to SQB.
Membership
School staff and at least two student representatives
Responsibilities
The operation, review and development of one or more related programmes.
Rather than dealing with individual modules, the Programme Board takes an overview of the operation of programmes in its remit. It considers the results of annual monitoring programmes and changes/developments to programmes.
It reports to the School Quality Board.
In some Schools the Programme and Module Boards are combined into a single Board of Studies, with similar memberships.
If your School has a Board of Studies it will consider both the programmes in its remit and the modules that are delievered.
Each School also has a Learning Enhancement Group that has no prescribed constitution or terms of reference but IS REQUIRED to have Student Representation.
This group reports to the Learning Enhancement Board, the School Quality Assurance Board and the School Senior Management team.
Membership
School Staff (often senior staff) and Student Representatives
This Board has overall responsibility for the quality of the teaching/learning provision in the School. It considers all proposals for modifying modules, proposals for new modules/programmes and reports from Module/Programme Boards (or Boards of Study as appropriate).
It reports directly to the University's Central Quality Assurance Board (QAB).
Assessment Boards will meet after each assessment period to consider and confirm students results. A Mitigation Panel meets before the Assessment Boards sit to consider mitigation that has been submitted by students during the relevant period of time. The names of students who have had mitigation accepted are passed to the Assessment Boards so these circumstances can be taken into account before confirming results.
Mitigation Panels and Assessment Boards are confidential as they are discussing individual students' details and therefore have no student representation. The Assessment Boards include external examiners.
These Boards are know as Module Assessment Boards (MAB) and Programme Assessment Boards (PAB) Central University Boards & Commmittees
The School Quality Board reports to the University's central Quality Assurance Board and ultimately to the Academic Board.
The Learning Enhancement Board was set up to consider matters connected to the learning, teaching and assessment. The Learning Ehancement Board reports to the Academic Board.
The Quality Assurance Board, the Learning Enhancement Board and the Academic Board all have two student representatives as part of their consitution. The two student members are the President and the Education/Welfare Officer from the Students' Union.
Other central Boards & Committees
RESEARCH COMMITTEE - Advises the Academic Board on matters related to research in the University.
COLLABORATIVE PROVISION GROUP - Advises the University Quality Assurance Board and the Research Committee on matters concerning the collaborative arrangements devlivered both in the UK and overseas.
