The University and Students' Union see student feedback as essential
Being a Student Rep is one of the most important roles you can play during your time at Sunderland and repping allows you to get involved with the University and Union and in the decision making process, which affects you and your fellow students.
After all, it is difficult for staff to assess how well your needs are being met without your input.
TO BECOME A STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE
At the beginning of the academic year your Programme Leader will hold elections to fill the posts of Student Representatives.
AFTER ELECTIONS
Once elected as a Student Representative your contact details will be sent to the Students' Union where it will be placed on the Representation database.
You will be then contacted by the Students' Union and invited to attend Introduction/Training .
All Elected Student Representatives have the opportunity to attend a Student Representatives training session. These are usually held late October/early November. However, there are always One to One Training sessions available for late elected Student Representatives. Representatives Training is essential as it widens your understanding of the University/Union services/procedures and develops your key skills. It will also highlight any details you may be unaware of, sharing ideas and meeting other reps (valuable experience), backed up with the help of the Student Representation Department. The exact work you do as a Student Representative will depend on what role you have taken on. Outlined below are the roles/responsibilities of a Student Representative.You don't necessary have to carry out all of the roles, you can put as much or as little into it as you wish. It depends on how much you want to get involved and how much time you have.
- Participating in School Board Meetings
- Attending Student Council Meetings
- Organising and attending Student Representative Forum Meetings
- Presenting students' views
- Communicating with University staff and course colleagues
- Reporting outcomes of meetings
- Referring students with academic/welfare issues to appropriate services
- Gathering students' views.
If you are interested in Student Representation you should contact your Programme Leader. The beginning of the new academic year is a busy time for everyone so if you have problems contacting your Programme Leader you can contact your School Office or email Julie, based in the Students' Union offices, Edinburgh Building, on the City Campus.

The University needs Student Representatives in order to assess how well student needs are being met. Student Representatives play a vital role in providing the University and Students' Union with feedback.
