Welcome to Your Union

Time Management

You will only have a certain amount of time to perform the tasks necessary to succeed on your course.

  • Part-time students in particular only have a limited amount of hours of direct contact with the academic staff and unless you can make it in to the university during the week you may find that the Learning Resource Centre (LRC) may only be available to you on the day(s) that you come in.
  • Full-time students often have a part-time job as this helps financially.
  • Mature students may have families, or may be single parents. Some students provide care for relatives as well as attending university.
    These factors may put stress on the amount of time that you have for revision, tidying up notes, reading books, assignments....not to mention the ordinary business of living!

It is imperative that you plan your time. You may find it useful to make a plan allocating time for various activities.

How much time do you need to spend per week studying?

This depends on the individual student and the workload - when assignments and exams are due, the workload is heavier - so you may find that you spend somewhere between 5-40 hours per week studying in addition to your attendance time.

To make use of your time;

  • Make use of any gaps between lectures (library, LRC and photocopying).
  • Don't let things pile up; work steadily to a routine
  • Don't leave everything to the holidays... there are other things to do then
  • Take breaks when studying - your capacity to absorb material is finite
  • Don't concentrate for too long on one subject -it is easy to concentrate of the subjects that you are good at and push the weaker or more difficult subjects aside
  • Keep a timetable or diary with all the important dates on it e.g. submission of assignments
  • Talk to your fellow students - if there are common difficulties tackle the lecturer.
  • If you have a problem that you can't see a way through discuss it with your lecturer or programme leader.
