Welcome to Your Union

Assessment

  • The assessment element of each module is usually divided into a mix of; Time Constrained Tests (TCA's), assignments, presentations, and oral viva's. Some assessments are set on an individual basis and others ned to be completed in groups.
  • Some modules will only have assignments and some will only have exams.
  • Some exams and assessments are now on WEBCT.
  • For part-time students TCA's and exams are usually arranged during the day that you normally attend university.
  • Students usually feel that it is easier to cope with assignments than exams as they feel more in control and have a period of time on which to work on the assignment.
  • If you hand in assignments late you may be wasting your time unless a later hand-in date has been agreed for everyone with your Module or Programme Leader as the marker may refuse to accept a late submission or you may be marked down. Remember to submit mitigation if circumstances or illness has affected your abiility to submit on time.
  • Lecturers almost always recognise when assignments are identical or largely copied and you will fall foul of the university regulations governing infringements of assessments. It is really easy to cut and paste from the internet but the University uses software that can detect this.
  • The use of word processing helps with presentation, grammar and spelling but you still need to check your work carefully. The word counter is a valuable tool.
  • "A diagram is worth a thousand words" - TRUE as long as it is relevant!
  • Don't copy chunks of material from books - and learn how to use Harvard referencing properly otherwise you may be accused of plagiarism. Information Services has prepared an Infobite guide to referencing.
  • Your lecturer should define the objectives, the scope of the assignment, the length of the submission (number of words) and be able to give some guidance on how long you should spend on it. Refer to your module guide often!
  • Seek advice on how to present essays, reports and research documents - there are expected/acceptable formats.
  • On each Campus there is a Learning Resource Centre (LRC) and usually assignments are submitted there unless your lecturer advises of other arrangements. Ensure that you make the time deadline for hand-in and that you complete the submission form and get a receipt. If the university loses your assignment this is your proof that you handed in the work on time.
