HAPPY BIRTHDAY STUDENTS’ UNION!!

It’s May 11th and your Students’ Union celebrates its’ 84th Birthday today!!

The oldest document in our archive is the foundation paper of the original Students’ Union at the then Sunderland Technical College, dated May 11th 1928.

The main functions of that first Union in 1928 were:

1.    To represent the students in all matters affecting their interests.
2.    To afford a recognised means of communication between the students and the college authorities..
3.    To promote corporate life amongst the students of the college
4.    To promote social relationships with students of other colleges

Photography Competition

A new Photography Competition that has been launched by Tourism Development at Sunderland City Council in partnership with the Sunderland Echo and the Love Where You Live Campaign 2012.

They are looking for people to send in up to two photographs of their favourite places, attractions, events and activities in Sunderland, or pictures of what make them proud of Sunderland.  The prize is two VIP tickets to the Airshow on Saturday 21 July which will include, complimentary food and drink, a private viewing area of the flying displays, a souvenir programme and other as of yet to be confirmed perks.…

Bye to our amazing non-sabbatical officers

We are very sad to say goodbye to our two fantastic non-sabbatical officers for this year. Adarsh Chuttooar the International Officer and Lauren Debney the Student Support Officer have finished their posts and we just wanted to thank them for all of the amazing work they have done this year. Adarsh has been amazing support for International students and has organised some great events including the Celebration of Diversity event in November. Lauren has been heavily involved in the set up of Sunderland Students Well-being Action Group (SWAG) and helping the Students’ Union to become one of 25 universities involved…

CAMPUS BUS SERVICE - Vacation Break

The Campus Bus Service takes a break in operation over the Easter vacation. Last day of service is Friday 30th March and we’ll be back and running at the beginning of the next semester - Monday 23rd April.

STOP PRESS: TAX SCAM TARGETING STUDENTS!

THOUSAND OF STUDENTS ARE BEING TARGETED TO RELEASE THEIR BANK DETAILS BY SCAM EMAIL PURPORTEDLY FROM HMRC.

Since the HMRC tax code scandal a little while ago, HMRC have been automatically issuing tax calculations and tax refunds as well as demands to rectify their mistakes. Many Students will have received refunds or a notification a refund is due by POST. These are more than likely genuine, but the fraudsters are sending emails to students in the hope the student will think it is really HMRC following up on their refund notice.

Students in Sunderland are being urged to protect their valuables from thieves.

Many students are returning to the city after the Christmas holidays and are bringing belongings such as sat navs, laptops, phones and cameras back with them.

These items are extremely attractive to criminals and officers are advising students to do everything they can to protect them.

Neighbourhood Inspector John Connolly said: “Items like mobile phones, laptops and digital cameras are exactly the type of items that thieves are looking to get their hands on. They can be picked up and taken in seconds - especially if they are left out on show.
